Can You Use Custom Models At Garden Tractor Pulling Competition?

When it comes to a garden tractor pulling competition, most of the organized events usually have a loophole or clause that some may construe as discriminatory to the mechanically inclined. Some may even say that the certain rules barring specific types of garden tractors border on overkill and that some of the fun is taken out of the garden tractor pulling event when some restrictions are enforced. So what rules do some disagree with?

One of the more common garden tractor pulling rules regards the types of garden tractors that may be used in the event. As a rule, most events disallow the use of custom made garden tractors. The rules states that the tractors must be factory or manufacturer constructed tractors.

Why such rule? It is a matter of safety, really. If the garden tractor has been produced by a reliable manufacturer and properly maintained, there is little question to the operating history of the tractor’s designer. A tractor company that has been in business for decades generally has a solid track record for making tractors that work under stress and are not prone to mechanical breakdown. A custom made garden tractor does not have an established consumer history. There are far many unproven areas with a homemade device.

When entering in a garden tractor pulling event, it is just too much for the organizers of the event to have to worry about the tractor literally falling apart when the competition starts. If a homemade garden tractor is constructed with dozens of parts picked and pieced from here and there, no one can truly certify the particular safety of the model for the garden tractor pulling event. So, this gray area is something that the organizers an judges would prefer to avoid. From their perspective, it is best to play it safe and it is hard to disagree with them.
